Gentle Support for Shutdown

Gentle Support for Shutdown & Overwhelm (Adults)

ADHD & Autism Editions (including PDA)

Shutdown isn’t something to fix.
It’s something to support safely.

The Gentle Support for Shutdown & Overwhelm kits are designed for moments when your nervous system has reached its limit — when thinking, speaking, deciding, or moving feels impossible, and pressure makes everything worse.

These kits focus on reducing harm, lowering demand, and supporting recovery without force.

They are available in two separate editions — one for ADHD, and one for Autism (including PDA) — so the support offered matches different nervous system needs.

🌱 What these kits are

These kits are:

  • low-demand support guides for shutdown and overwhelm
  • written to be used during or after shutdown
  • focused on safety, containment, and nervous system care
  • permission-based, not prescriptive

They are not:

  • recovery plans
  • productivity tools
  • behaviour management guides
  • “push through” strategies

Nothing in these kits needs to be completed.
Support is optional, flexible, and allowed to be slow.

🧠 What the kits cover

Each edition includes:

  • how shutdown shows up in that nervous system
  • what helps during shutdown without escalating it
  • how to reduce cognitive, sensory, and emotional load
  • guidance for communication when words aren’t accessible
  • permission to stop, rest, and do less
  • gentle re-entry after shutdown without pressure

Step-by-step support is included only where it genuinely helps, and always framed as optional.

👤 Choose the edition that fits you

  • ADHD Edition
Focuses on cognitive overload, emotional flooding, freeze, and the impact of task-stacking and pressure. Support is designed to reduce mental load and decision-making during shutdown.
  • Autism Edition (including PDA)
Focuses on sensory overload, loss of control, transitions, masking, and demand-related threat responses. Support prioritises autonomy, predictability, and sensory safety.

You do not need a formal diagnosis to use these resources.
If it resonates, it’s allowed to be helpful.

🪹 How these kits fit with the Understanding resources

These kits are designed to follow the Shutdown & Overwhelm – Understanding resources, but they can be used on their own.

  • Understanding kits explain why shutdown happens
  • Gentle Support kits offer ways to reduce harm when it does

Nothing is required.
Nothing is timed.
Nothing needs to work every time.

📄 What’s included

  • 1 × Gentle Support for Shutdown & Overwhelm (PDF)
  • Choice of ADHD or Autism (incl. PDA) edition
  • Optional step-by-step support
  • Written for neurodivergent adults
  • Digital download for personal use

👪 For parents and supporters

If you are supporting a neurodivergent adult, separate Supporter Guides are available in our Parents & Supporters section.

The Gentle Support kits themselves are written directly to the adult to protect autonomy and dignity.

🖤 Why these kits exist

Many neurodivergent adults are told to calm down, try harder, or push through shutdown.

These kits exist to offer something different:
support that does not increase pressure.

Shutdown is not a failure.
Recovery does not need to be forced.

Support is allowed to be gentle.
