Shutdown & Overwhelm Support Guide

Shutdown & Overwhelm – Supporter Guides

Supporting ADHD & Autistic Adults (including PDA)

When a neurodivergent adult shuts down, it can be frightening, confusing, and deeply upsetting to witness.

You may want to help — but feel like anything you say or do makes things worse.
You may worry about saying the wrong thing, pushing too much, or not doing enough.
You may feel helpless watching someone you care about disappear, withdraw, or stop responding.

These Supporter Guides exist to help you understand what is happening — and how to support without increasing distress, pressure, or harm.

🌱 What these guides are

These guides are:

  • nervous-system-led explanations of shutdown and overwhelm
  • written specifically for parents, partners, carers, and close supporters
  • focused on safety, understanding, and reducing escalation
  • designed to protect relationships as well as the individual

They are not:

  • behaviour management plans
  • instructions for making someone comply
  • crisis control checklists
  • guides to “fixing” shutdown

Support here is about containment, not correction.

🧠 What the guides cover

Each guide explains:

  • what shutdown and overwhelm actually are
  • why shutdown can look like refusal, avoidance, or disengagement
  • why talking, reasoning, or encouraging often backfires
  • how pressure affects the nervous system during shutdown
  • what helps during shutdown without escalating it
  • how to reduce harm and support recovery
  • how to look after yourself as a supporter

The Autism edition includes clear discussion of:

  • sensory overload
  • loss of control and predictability
  • masking and cumulative burnout
  • PDA-related demand responses

The ADHD edition focuses on:

  • cognitive overload and emotional flooding
  • freeze responses
  • decision paralysis
  • shutdown after prolonged pushing or coping

👪 Choose the guide that fits

  • ADHD Supporter Guide
For supporting adults whose shutdown is linked to cognitive overload, emotional flooding, and prolonged mental strain.
  • Autism Supporter Guide (including PDA)
For supporting autistic adults whose shutdown is linked to sensory saturation, loss of autonomy, transitions, and demand-related threat.

You do not need professional training to use these guides.
If you care and want to understand, they are for you.

🪹 How these guides fit with other NeuroNest resources

These guides are designed to sit alongside:

  • Shutdown & Overwhelm – Understanding Kits (adult-facing)
  • Gentle Support for Shutdown & Overwhelm (adult-facing)

Adult kits are written directly to the neurodivergent adult.
Supporter guides are kept separate to protect autonomy and dignity.

They are companions — not replacements.

🖤 Why these guides exist

Shutdown is often misunderstood as refusal, laziness, or disengagement.

These guides exist to say:
this is a nervous system protecting itself — not a person choosing not to try.

Understanding changes how support is offered.
And how support is offered changes how safe recovery can be.
